“Russo's writing never fails to be moving and memorable. However, this book could have used a good editor. ”

I am genuinely surprised at how much this author was able to pack into a novel that at first glace appeared to be about a simple mundane town and family. The story which spans several generations actually turned out to be quite complex. I admit, that I probably did not get out of the story all that Russo had put into it (because I skimmed quite often, if only to get to the end), but I did like what I could glean from the story . This is definitely a book meant for book reviews/clubs and discussions. There are so many questions left unanswered for me. Each of the characters has a certain trait that can be discussed on end. I can say that I liked this book, and as my first Russo read (and maybe my last - I like easier reading), I'm impressed with his writing. I gave the book four stars, but I'm not sure if I'd recommend it to everyone. You have to be a dedicated reader to read this one. ”

The shifting in point of view was at times confusing and at other times revelatory, but also led to repetition. Empire Falls was a better read.”

The narrator, Louis Lynch, who grows up to run the local market/corner store that his Dad purchased, guides the reader through much of it, and it's often mesmerizing with insights into the joys and trials of daily life.”

He is a new author to me and now I can't wait to check out some of his other work.. I love books about childhood and family and coming of age. Russo's characters are very rich and compex, and I loved every one of them even with all of their foibles. This is a story about how tenuous life can be - and how easily it can change dramatically depending on our choices. And how, even though we may be happy in our lives, it is still tempting to think if ways it could have been different. ”

I loved all the Characters and thought they were very well written and developed. Russo certainly writes true to life and I rarely find books that make me sad they are ending. This was one of them!”
