Bridge of Sighs

by Richard Russo

Amazon Significant Seven, November 2007: Richard Russo's first book since the Pulitzer Prize-winning Empire Falls, Bridge of Sighs is a typically stunning portrait of three small town families struggling--like the town itself--to strike a balance between obsessively embracing their own history or shunning it entirely, with devastating consequences along both paths. Bridge of Sighs is pure... (read more)

FrugalReader.com Members 424 books / 45 members / 229 posts A group for Shelfari.com members who are also FrugalReader.com members!
Book Chat 655 books / 1774 members / 5128 posts Rather than being about a particular genre or author or book this group is about books and reading in general.

Topics have ranged from such things as favorite bookstore, whether you re-read your favorite books, what kind of bookmarks you use, where you read, what you read, i.e. stand alone or epics or short stories or poems and how you arrange your bookshelves at home as well as how you arrange your Shelfari shelves, to name a few.

It's fun to see how much we have in common with others and maybe learn some new ideas at the same time.

BEA Lit Insiders 174 books / 538 members / 213 posts Welcome to the BookExpo America Lit Insider group on Shelfari!
What the hell is a BEA Lit Insider? Well, BEA is the 2nd largest book fair in the world and takes place every June. This year the show is in L.A. and I'd love tohear from any West Coasters that are interested in the show or are planning on going. By the way, I’m the director of BookExpo America and you can check out my blog and learn more about how books are “made” www.mediumatlarge.net

50 Book Challenge! 2554 books / 2350 members / 13001 posts When asked about the new Amazon Kindle product, Steve Jobs CEO of Apple computer had this to say:

“It doesn’t matter how good or bad the product is, the fact is that people don’t read anymore,” he said. “Forty percent of the people in the U.S. read one book or less last year. The whole conception is flawed at the top because people don’t read anymore.”

Welcome to the the 50 Book Challenge, where we fly in the face of Steve Jobs.

Basically .... the challenge is to read 50 books in one year. OR ... establish a goal for yourself more or less, it's up to you, just because we say 50 books doesn't mean that has to be your goal too.

Start a thread, WITH YOUR NAME IN THE SUBJECT OF YOUR ORIGINAL POST, and log your books. It is a very good idea to bookmark (when in your post, add it to your internet browser's favorites) your post for easy location for future updates. Things move quickly around here.

If you haven't been keeping track of the books you've read, start when you join.

Thanks for being here and have fun. If you have any suggestions or questions, feel free to contact me.

Good Reads 20 books / 352 members / 1030 posts The motto for this group is "Anything goes." Any genre and every genre.

How it's going to work is that each month a different member will select 4 or 5 books that he would like to read. He will then post a new thread with the titles in it. At that point the rest of us can respond with our vote. By the end of the voting period (the 15th of the month), the book with the most votes will win. In case of a tie, both books will be selected and if members want to read both books, they may, or if you want to choose which one you read, that is fine as well.

In order to be selected to nominate books you have to have participated in the book voting or discussion two months prior. Participation means discussing or voting. The reason the person who nominates books is selected two months in advance is because the date of voting begins so early.

All genres will be accepted as appropriate for this group. It can be anything from a best seller, horror, drama, real life, non-fiction, humor, YA, children's, science fiction, classic, you name it, we can read it. Don't feel like you have to read every book we choose. If you don't like our selection, feel free to sit this one out. Or, if you want to sit out a few months for various other reasons, not a problem.

This is YOUR book group. Everyone has a say so in what they want to read by picking out a few titles themselves. At the same time, you also get a little bit of choice and opinion in the voting each cycle.

If you want to receive group notifications about voting and winning titles, make sure to sign your name on the thread about wanting to receive notifications.

Mrs. Gaetano's English Class, Period 1, Third Quarter 29 books / 21 members / 141 posts Welcome to your third quarter outside reading book project! Your first attempt at Shelfari was wonderful. We are going to change things a little bit and try to grow in our responses to the literature. 1. I would like you to write a book review where you explain what is going on in the book. Notice, this is not a plot summary, but an overview of what a reader should expect as she reads the book. Please look on shelfari.com for a review of your book. It should help you understand what you should include in your project. 2. Along with the review I would like you to include a quote that exemplifies the character, a theme, or the understanding of the book. 3. Finally, I want you to end this review with a recommendation. Who would like this book? What other books can you relate your book to? After you are done with this recommendation I would like you to comment on your classmates’ reviews. This requires you to make a thoughtful comment and to ask a question. You are required to respond to at least three people. Please look at the project wrap-up for the last quarter to see some truly exemplary examples.
