Didn’t Like It“Hard to get through and not really worth reading. A variety of killers and art hunters are seeking the Amber Room, a room made of Amber originally believed to have been stolen from the Russians by the Nazis. Didn't really care for any of the characters.” see full review » see other reviews » |
“This was a great book---and Steve Berry has a knack for taking a mystery out of the history books and putting his own slant on it. This one is about the theft of panels of pure amber, stolen from the Catherine Palace at Tsarskoe Selo, Russia by the Nazis during WWII. The story takes place in current times, with the main character finding clues as to where the Nazis have hidden the panels. Excellent!”

Actually it was the first novel he had published. A judge and her ex husband lawyer are drawn in the acquisitors intrigue and spider web of death when Rachel's father is murdered. It looks like an accident, but there are extenuating circumstances like papers in a freezer. Rachel takes off to find her father's pen pal in Germany. She finds him, but he is murdered and she is given false information. She's with a competitive acquisitor who wants to bed her and then kill her. Her husband doesn't hear from Rachel and he takes off to find her in Germany. Paul finds her and soon the two are embroiled in a chase for death over the coveted Czarina Elizabeth's Amber Room. The pace doesn't stop and I always love it when the bad guys kill each other and the good guys win. You aren't sure for awhile, but I'm always happy when it does end this way. I like when all the stolen treasures go through the agony of being found and then the scrambles for who gets what.”
