I think Milan Kundera is a better intellectual than writer. He is not a very beautiful writer, and I find him to be work and not pleasure. This book gave me a lot to think about. Things I won't soon forget since I am also an emigreƩ, adn the book studies the experience - much like the author's...

I really enjoyed this quick novel by Kundera. He is a master of writing novels that explore ephemeral themes such as memory, forgetting and ignorance, as he does in this story. "Ignorance" is predominantely about two Czech emigre's who are visiting their homelands after decades away (one living in Denmark, the other in France). The two characters had even met before emigrating from Czechoslovakia twenty-plus years earlier. The reader speculates on what may happen to, and between, these characters; memory and its effects on their actions will certainly play their role.

This was my first book by Kundera after having been recommended him several times. The novel concerns to emigrees returning to their homecountry after twenty years away and meeting up with each other. One remembers the other vividly while the other has no recollection of the other at all. The novel is philosophical meditation on nostalgia and memory with deep emotions bubbling under a seemingly placid surface. I found the tasle slight in its entirity but Kundera's observations on human nature make the book both worth reading and resonate.

"..we always believe that our memories coincide with those of the persons we loved, that we experienced the same thing. but this is just an illusion."

"Toti se inseala in privinta viitorului. Omul nu poate fi sigur decat de clipa prezenta.Dar e, intr-adevar sigur? Poate el cu adevarat sa cunoasca prezentul? E in stare sa-l judece?
great story and caracters filled with love, memories, regrets...

I think Milan Kundera is a better intellectual than writer. He is not a very beautiful writer, and I find him to be work and not pleasure. This book gave me a lot to think about. Things I won't soon forget since I am also an emigreƩ, adn the book studies the experience - much like the author's own - of a Czech emigre in France, returning home, but no longer feeling at home.

    Overview: Editorial Review.

Irena and Josef meet by chance while returning to their homeland, which they had abandoned twenty years earlier. Will they manage to pick up the thread of their strange love story, interrupted almost as soon as it began and then lost in the tides of history? The truth is that after such a long absence "their memories no longer match."

A romance, with philosophical insights here and there. Good read.
