Didn’t Like It“2 1/2 Stars. It’s definitely not my favorite Doctor Who book that I’ve read, but it was okay. Reading it, it feels that some important element is missing that we get from the TV series. I wouldn’t recommend this book, but I expect Doctor Who fans will give it a go, like I did. |
“Shortly after the new Doctor Who series launched in 2005, BBC Books launched a series of original books featuring the Ninth Doctor and Rose Tyler as portrayed on television by Christopher Eccleston and Billie Piper. These books have commonly come to be known as the New Series Adventures. These books were launched 3 at a time with the first three being The Clockwise Man, The Monsters Inside , and Winner Takes All .
In The Clockwise Man by Justin Richards, the Doctor and Rose land at the British Empire Exhibition in 1924, where they discover that people are being murdered. In the process of investigating, they meet, among other people, the deposed Czar of Russia. One character referenced simply as Anna in the novel is most likely supposed to be Anastasia.
I'm not going to go into a lengthy exposition on this book, but I certainly enjoyed it. It was nice to "see" Christopher Eccleston and Rose again. I really liked Eccleston as the Doctor and felt he didn't stay long enough. The novel also featured clockwork men which were not too dissimilar to those later featured in The Girl in the Fireplace. I'm not sure if there was any connection between them, but there doesn't appear to be. The novel also mentioned "Bad Wolf", which was part of the story arc for this season: a nice touch.”
“Good introduction of the characters in written form.”

On the other hand, Rose’s conversation with Beth brings back fantastic memories of Gwyneth at the undertakers, Cardiff, and Torchwood. And Justin Richards doesn’t miss a beat when bad wolf is brought up in conversation to the Doctor and Rose. The expected quirky humor lives on like when Rose freaks out rightfully so because there are no seat belts in cars in 1924.”
“This was kind of interesting. I felt like it sort of fell apart towards the end though.”

It's London in the 1920's and Rose and the Doctor are setting out to visit the museum exhibition.Their travels never run smoothly and after rescuing a man in the street from an attack they find the TARDIS has been taken.Rose makes quite an impression on the young Frederick and they soon find that they are investigating murders that are inhuman.Frederick is very helpful young boy who can help them solve the mystery. The painted Lady who has been visiting with Freddies parents holds more pieces of the puzzle.A fun story as usual featuring the Doctor.

The problem with novel tie-in series: they are usually not written well, occasionally contradict the tv show, and they can't do much character development (such as deaths, hook ups, etc.). That being said, if you are suffering a Doctor Who withdrawal, this might help. Or you might find it irritating. For what it is, it was ok. I would recommend this if you were on a vacation and didn't want to think very hard. And sometimes, putting your brain away for awhile can be fun.”
