It was an interesting book, but such a long read that I wish I'd given in to the temptation to skim it or put it down. There are some pretty word pictures, and it was certainly enlightening, although since it was organized in vignettes, there were times it deviated from straight linear chronology. My thought was that reading an older book would force me to slow down and savour the language. I guess I'm too much a child of my times. Give me faster-paced, tighter writing with less passive and formal structure, and with less narrative comment.”
