The Status Syndrome will change your perception of health. It certainly helps the reader to see how health isn't a personal issue, but a systemic or social issue. It's based on the idea that there is a health scale (from really good health or longevity to extremely poor health and longevity) and that where we are on that scale depends on our place in a social scale (our place in society). The theory is backed by decades of research in various communities and social settings all over the world.
This is a book that is important and impressive in it's scope and research, but a bit slow under the weight of all that research. If you read the first chapter and can accept the overall premise, you won't gain much by reading the rest of the book. The later chapters are simply more fuel for the fire.
