Learn a lot about North Carolina when it was logged. The principal characters were fascinating. Good read.

Intense look at greed. Strong characters - loved the lumber jack's philosophical lunch breaks, they were a wonderful respite from the destructiveness of Serena.

I wanted to like this book so much. And some of it is really good. The plot's intriguing, but for me it never really goes anywhere. Serena remains an enigma until the end. And while I appreciate the author's knowledge of timber and logging, I found most of the description a bore. I'm glad I didn't give up on it, because I did end up liking it, but I would not re-read it again which for me is a true testament to a good read.

I really enjoyed the adventures of this very strange woman in a very different time. Serena was a pleasure to read, and moved quickly.

It was a well written book. He vividly captured the time period and the characters. It was faster paced toward the end but it did not grab me. The first part of the novel was good. It did not blow me away but I like his writing style so i will try another book he has written for sure.

Wow - I live in North Carolina so the historical accounts of the timber barons blighting the mountains in western NC was very interesting. The story line was very powerful and violent. Might not recommend to everyone.

I got half way through, and it just didn't give me enough reasons to continue.

So far really good, I'm only a couple of chapters in, but so much has happened already.

What a well developed & very wicked character Serena is.

I read a NY Times review of the novel and was intrigued. I read One Foot in Eden and Saints by the River as was struck by the lean lyrical writing. This book is larger in length and scope. I'm in the early part of the book but am having trouble putting it down to go to sleep.
