Beautiful! Thompson just continues to amaze me with the scoop of her talent. It seems no matter what she tries, I am amazed by her vision and the beauty of her written word. This time its literary erotica, high class erotica, that totally kept me mesmerized. A wonderful Selkie tale! Cannot wait...

I know I read this, but can't recall what it was about. When Firefox was installed I noted that there no longer was a lot of info listed, and the review was gone. Probably because it was only 3 stars, I never wanted to bother getting the other books in this series.

The hero of “Lord of the Deep” is a selkie, which is basically a creature of the ocean, who can take the form of either a seal or a human. When it takes human form, it will go ashore and mate with mortals. Being blessed with incredible physical beauty (when the selkie is in human form I guess, coz I’d like to think that people aren’t turned on by seals and if they are, I really don’t want to know about it), mortal lovers are often enamoured of their selkie lovers and will do anything to keep them by their side. You can keep a selkie with you by possessing his sealskin so that he remains in human form, but once you return his skin to him, he will never look back and return to the sea.

NOTE: First of all I would just like to say that my review will contain spoilers. Also I encourage readers to read the book (Maybe not buy it...) themselves regardless of my positive or negative review.

This is also a very erotic book so every fifty pages or so someone, usually the main characters, are getting it on. If that sounds like the type of book you don’t want to read stop reading this review and you’ll thank me later. Otherwise when you go to read this you will be mad that you wasted your time and possibly your money.

REVIEW: Enter Meg, accused of witchcraft she is isolated on a island of Mists with her Aunt and Uncle. Her only fate is to be trained as a priestess which requires a ceremony that takes her virginity for the initiation ritual. While contemplating her fate she stares out her bedside window and happens to witness the mystical selkies changing into human form and mating.

Simeon is the ruler of the deep and Meg’s fascination with him leads her to fantasize about him thinking he can’t see her through the window. Later Meg finds herself whisked away into the sea and pleasured by Simeon. No longer a virgin, she can not expect to be initiated into as a priestess. She has two choices she must face from her on out, face a short life together with an immortal Simeon and age. Or remain on land and become a whore for a wicked man of a cult that takes non-virgins and uses them as he sees fit but in return gives them food, clothing, and shelter.

Meg has her own hesitations about Simeon because she really doesn’t know him, which is normal. One night of sex does not equal everlasting love. There is competition for Meg and although as a female I do get tired of the main character being oh so gorgeous and alluring without their own notice of it, I do like a little healthy competition. I think it keeps the main male character on his feet and in a he-man “protective” mode leaving them focused on winning the girl.

Meg’s not always the brightest thing in the book and every once in awhile I found myself raising an eyebrow at what she thought was appropriate to do in a deadly situation. But then again I always remind myself that the stupid things that happen in a story have to happen or else there would be no story!

The secondary characters in this book were very good and I didn’t mind all the sex because I was truly interested in reading more about all the characters good, bad, and otherwise. Simeon has a brother that is only half selkie and he struggles with his own feelings because he is neither fully a part of the sea world nor the human world. He has a fascination with what his mother was like and why he was allowed to be raised underwater together with Simeon, his half brother, but never recognized as his equal. Unable to let people know his own birth right because of what that might cost him, instead he is the servant to Simeon and a wise consol. Meg’s Aunt is depicted as a stern old woman that knows and is wary of ancient legends. She warns Meg about the dangers of enticing selkies and is the first to realize she’s been with a selkie male. Her suspicious nature creates difficulties for Meg, first for her own good and then out of spite.
It was also nice to see other magical creatures in this book besides the selkies and the underwater realm. There were witches, another lord like Simeon but of another realm, and the author put in another legend along with the selkies for horses. The whole underwater universe appealed to me because I like folk lore and Gods. This was a good book and I’m awaiting the sequel!

PLEASE NOTE: I wrote this reviews just days before hearing about Dawn's death. At the time, I decided to hold the review, out of respect for Dawn. But I had every intention of posting this review at a later date and I felt it was now time to post this review. RIP Dawn. You are missed.

Meg has been declared a witch and banished to the Isle of Mists. Her aunt and uncle take her in and begin to train her to become a priestess. However, in order to become a priestess, she must remain a virgin since that is where the magic comes from.

Late one night looking out to the beach, Meg sees the selkies arrive for a divine evening of orgies under the full moon. One of these selkies, a man so glorious Meg has never seen anyone who compares to him, catches her eye... and her attraction, beckoning her with his selkie magic.

Now she is ruined, unable to complete the ritual to become a priestess, sold into slavery as one of the shamans’ whores. Until Simeon comes to her rescue. He is the prince of the selkies, the Lord of the Deep, and he has chosen Meg as his mate. Can they see past their differences and opposite worlds to find sensual happiness like she has never known?

I have to say I love romance novels that incorporate the legends of the selkies into the adventure. As such, I was quite excited to begin Lord of the Deep, expecting that I would adore the story. The descriptions of Simeon’s kingdom and palaces are beautiful and I was so easily able to envision them in my mind’s eye. Relationships between the characters were brilliantly developed, though I found myself drawn more to the secondary characters than to Simeon and Meg. Vega especially caught my attention and I loved the exploration of his personality. I also loved Gideon, the Lord of the Dark, and found his story to be quite heartbreaking. I would love to see him find the happiness he is so desperately seeking.

While Dawn Thompson’s writing is quite lyrical and her talent is very apparent, the extreme sex scenes overpowered her writing. Yes, I was very well aware of the fact that this was an erotica and would be very hot, but some of the scenes were so far out of my comfort zone I don’t know how I managed to get through them. There were a couple scenes in particular that actually disgusted me and if this were not a book sent to me to review, I would not have read beyond the point of the first one of these scenes. Unfortunately I cannot reveal which particular scenes those were as they give away plot points not revealed until well into the novel.

In my opinion, even knowing the legends of the selkies represent them as extremely sensual creatures, Lord of the Deep would have been better as a regular paranormal romance novel rather than an erotica. That way, Thompson could let her real talent for world building and exquisite narration shine through. As an erotica story, the focus is too much on the sexual relationship, resulting in the fact that the magic of the legends and the beautiful fantasy world cannot be as deeply explored.

While I will most certainly continue to read Dawn Thompson’s paranormal romance novels, I don’t know as I will read any future erotica novels she may write. Because several of the particular scenes in this story had such a strong negative impact on me I’d be hesitant to read future stories of hers in this genre for fear of finding similar scenes.

Meg was accused of being a witch on the mainland and is now banished to the Isle of Mist, where she’s living with her Aunt Adelia and Uncle Olwyn. On the Isle she’s facing a fate of giving her virginity to the Shaman of a cult and to become a high priestess. But one night Meg looks out of her darkened window and sees some seals coming ashore. She is intrigued when she discovers they are not seals as they shed their pelts and turn into males and females. They are Selkies performing their mating rituals during the full moon. The Lord of the Deep is the gorgeous male who’s got Meg’s attention and without even knowing she calls out to him.

Simeon is the Selkie King, the Lord of the Deep. During the full moon his people will go up to the surface and performing their mating ritual on the beach. When an unknown cry reaches him, he cannot ignore it and finds Meg spying on them. Simeon is tired of his Selkie consorts and wants Meg instead. The only thing on his mind is a night full of passion. But Meg is different than the rest and Simeon wants to keep her in his life.

Is it possible for Simeon to find a way so that Meg can exist in his world under water?

The main-characters Meg and Simeon are great individuals. They both are strong and determined to save the other from any danger or harm.
Meg is accused of being a witch and lives separate from mankind, she is preparing herself to become a high priestess. But as soon as she sees Simeon on the beach with the other Selkies and later on his water horse, nothing else matters anymore. She wants him and nobody else.
Simeon, the Lord of the Deep is tired of his Selkies consorts and is determined to make Meg his as he caught her spying on them during their ritual. The only problem Simeon has is to find a way for Meg to breath under water just like he does.

The secondary characters are quite interesting. Vega is Simeon’s older brother. Although Vega is older than Simeon, he is not in line for the throne this all because of his background. He is a half breed, half human-half Selkie. Meg’s aunt Adelia who teaches Meg everything she needs to know to become a priestess, but turns out to be one hell of an enemy. The Shaman Seth of the cult is a very bad man; he’ll do anything to get Meg in his bed especially when he sees what Meg is capable off.
And last but not least, there is Gideon, Lord of the Dark who saves Meg once from the evil Shaman and warns Simeon to take better care of Meg or he will claim her for his own….God what a man.

Lord of the Deep by Dawn Thomson is the first novel in this series and it is a great one. She has written a very hot and steamy erotica novel mixed with myths. The myth says, the Selkies enchanted people of Scotland, were beautiful men and women who came ashore to take a human lover. But the romances were doomed because they couldn’t stay on shore for long.

I have to warn you, if you hope to find a historical love novel, you’ll be disappointed. Although the story is a myth, it is definitely an erotica novel and the love scenes are hot and very steamy. You’ll find some fireworks between the main-characters.

I have to say this book lured my attention with the world she created. Dawn Thompson pulled me right into the story and I was curious enough to finish it. The next one in line will be Gideon, The Lord of the Dark and I’m eager to read more about him.

Great story that actually lives up to the cover! Erotica with a great plot and relatively well-developed characters. I'm eager for the next one.

Lord of the Deep is another perfect example of Dawn Thompson's brilliant imagination. I love the story of Meg and Simon. If you enjoy erotica with a bold, exciting plot as well, you'll enjoy this book. I can't wait for the next book in the series! Brava! Well done!
