Didn’t Like It“It was a quick, easy read, but it lacks any real terror. The characters were well-written, the situation was easy to understand, and the use of ancient Jewish culture put an interesting spin on it. The ending was too abrupt and very disappointing.” see full review » see other reviews » |

When the dorms empty for Thanksgiving, Robin and a few others have chosen to stay then go home for the holiday. When another presence shows up, the five students band together and develop a strange rapport with each other. Little do they know about how important the five of them being together is going to change the rest of the term.
This was a fast paced and quick read. I enjoyed it and although I liked the characters, in some ways I didn't like them. They were all flawed, which although good, I found how quickly they banded together in some ways, unbelievable. I still had questions when the novel finished but they were just little ones and could be that they were tied up at some point, but I missed it. I did enjoy this book and plan on reading more by this author.

“I really enjoyed it, wasn't too short and wasn't too long, just right. Nice way to spend the day after an exam!”

This is the first (and maybe only) for the month. I am glad I read this as my purse book as I know I'd have had wild-ass dreams of the extremely scary kind. I enjoy the horror novels that lets me use my imagination and not have everything spelled out in big bloody letters. That's what makes the movie Psycho remain the flick that keeps my shower curtain open after watching it every time.
Alexandra Sokoloff writes a genuinely creep me the hell out book and I can't wait to read more!
Four scare the piss out of you beans..... ”
“It was kind of like Saved by the Bell grows up 5 years and then meets Poltergeist on a college campus. While that may not sound enjoyable, it was fairly good book. ”

Mass Market Paperback - October 30, 2007
4 Stars
Robin Stone is a troubled young woman. Her means of escape from her unbalanced mother was by running away to college paid with guilt money from her absentee father.
Still, she remains unhappy and depressed in the academic arena and feels like a shadow nobody will miss if she's gone. When Thanksgiving comes, she stays in the echoing Mendenhall dormitories rather than going home to her mother for the long holiday weekend.
She finds that she's not alone and on the first night with the help of drugs and alcohol she makes friends with the unlikely mixture of remaining students: Martin, Patrick, Cain and Lisa.
Lisa finds a Ouija board. Its uncanny responses freak everybody. Have they really contacted the spirit of Zackary Prince or is she the blunt of a practical joke? And then it gets stranger.
The Harrowing is not a book you want to read when you go to bed unless you plan on sleeping with your eyes open and listening for the bump in the night. Especially when you read Chapter Twenty-One!
Ms. Sokoloff is a talented writer. She drew characters with personal insecurities, placed them in a recognizable setting, and then threw in paranormal elements, causing me to become quickly caught into the story. I accepted that stretch when reality told a step away. I look forward to reading her next book.

“I both liked and disliked this book. In the end, I am somewhat indifferent. I found the writing style early on in the novel to contain a few too many cliches which made it all seem a little forced. However, once Sokoloff is able to move forward with the plot of the story (that is after she introduces you to the main characters) and begins the haunting, these cliches fall away nicely. I found The Harrowing to be an easy read in which I was compelled to read more for the majority of the book. However, once the reader is introduced to more of the background behind the haunting, the whole reason behind the haunting becomes less interesting. This is a very easy read with an interesting premise, but I am not quite sure that Sokoloff truly delivers.”
