Celine's machine gun style prose, the trademark...,dot dot dot, places him squarely at the head table. A volcanic fury from page one, whose tenderness, compassion, and pursuit of his mistress "life " is often orlooked or oversahdowed by the stain of his war time pamphlets. Indeed, I am never really done reading Journey or his sophmore and arguably more artisitc Death on the Installment Plan. Gunther deserves the backlash for a sixty year silence more I think , but that is another debate altogether.

do you think we could place celine, henry miller, scott fitzgerald and bukowski in the same category of writers?

I'd have to see your explanation as to why Fitzgerald is in the mix before I agreed with that grouping.

bukowski has admitted to be a fan of celine, which says something because he was not a fan of all that many writers

The reason Bukowski recommended Celine is that he is a realistic writer. He excludes the baloney we see in so much writing about life. Bukowski understood that life is constant struggle, and that it ends with a defeat for each of us. Celine was observing the same thing, cutting through the nice pictures that make hell on earth bearable.
