The days bleed into each other, his only escape being a fantasy realm where he dons tights and becomes "the smartest kid on Earth." A grim history of parental abandonment, stretching all the way...” see full review » see other reviews » |
“ Depressing, confusing, interesting at times, innovative, occasionally amusing. I can see how Chris Ware has influenced many other cartoonists.”

But if they DID.), I would have no answer for them, and I'd probably punch them in the face for asking such a presumptuous question about literature, as if something could be "best," or as if there actually were some kind of objective scale of greatness for books. But AFTER punching them in the face, I'd probably loan them a copy of this book, in hopes that it would prevent them from having me arrested for assault and battery. There are other graphic novels (Alan Moore's "Watchmen" comes to mind) that are masterpieces of their genre, written by authors who know and love the history, the form, of their chosen field -- Jimmy Corrigan is a work that is that, but also transcends its genre. ”

The layout, the art, the story . . .everything comes together in a fresh way that comments on the medium itself, but never dilutes the damn good story that is being told. First rate.”

One that changed my life, revealing to teenage Alex the true darkness, not in being a misunderstood weirdo, but in being an ignored faliure, and the true battle happens with in, and you may and most likely will lose. Sounds emo, but I could not reccomend it more. Read it America!”

Considered by many his magnum opus the story of Jimmy Corrigan is both beautifully moving and innovative, invoking colors and layouts that suck you in like no other comic book can. Truly one of the greatest tales ever told. Filled to the brim with lovely details and heart wrenching plot twists.”

The artwork is at once beautifully simple and gorgeously detailed. The colors chosen are perfect; I especially loved the sepia-toned images. The stories of three generations of "nobodies" each named Jimmy Corrigan (grandfather, father and son) are both hilarious and heartbreaking. An incredible book that has so much detailed work in it (including the marvelous double-sided fold-out dust jacket on the hardcover edition) that you'll want to read it again and again. And again. Do yourself a huge favor and buy this book. Don't just borrow it; buy a copy for your very own. If you're like me you'll treasure it forever.”
