I'm a big fan of John's at a philosophical level, but this book's content is so obvious that it teaches the designer nothing (new). Maybe this book was targeted at non trade folks who want to get the basics of design. The Laws of Simplicity for Dummies, so to speak.” see full review » see other reviews » |
“It's now available as an ebook on the MIT press portal http://mitpress-ebooks.mit.edu/product/laws-simplicity”

This is not a "how to" although he does include some tactical ideas. It is more about the writings by a highly artistic graphics designer who expresses his philosophical approach to life using simplicity as a metaphor or back drop.”

For such a short book, there is a fair bi tof padding, e.g. he marvels at the fact that the letters MIT (where he works) are contained in the word SIMPLICITY. Wow ! How about that ?
He then points out that the same three letters also appear in the word COMPLEXITY. Stunning !
You can find much better stuff for free on the internet (e.g. http://zenhabits.net)
I only finished the book because I paid £12 for it.”
“This was an interesting book to read. Although it was written primarily concerning things such and graphic design and invention, the principals Maeda teaches are very easily applied to many everyday things. A huge stress is placed on simplicity, which is valued greatly over complexity. Maeda also teaches the importance of organization, efficiency, context, emotion, trust and failure. He analyzes each of his ten laws individually, building up to a cumulative guide of how to simplify within design.”

One example, the iPod is a simple device because it has only a few "intuitive" buttons. Wrong, the iPod has a screen, which implies a large (infinite) number of buttons. A very poor book, the only thing I learned from it is that the author is a professor at MIT.”
