“Remarkable weave of poetry. I find this book a wonderful read with its astonishing fluidity which is almost like a song. The author creates a vivid picture with specific imagery and tone that you can feel the presence of the well developed characters. I find myself immersed in the realm of Crystelle’s experiences. With a past life that haunts her, it is easy to recognize the importance of forgiveness and of closure. But there is a broader message that goes beyond the scope of personal grief. I admire the author’s style not just because she was a former professor of mine, but because her style of writing is one of a kind. The New York Times definitely picked the right novels to include in their 2007 best new books to check out. - http://benee73.multiply.com/reviews/item/4 ”

“The writing is wonderfully textured, almost surreal... which is to be rather expected considering that the main character is being haunted by her old lover, and almost her old life. It was a great read, and the characters are well developed. ”
“Martha Southgate included this book on her list of recommended but little known books by African American authors (the list can be found at http://www.nytimes.com/2007/07/01/books/review/southgate-list.html?ex=1184040000&en=32e98e644c9b00d1&ei=5070She describes the book as "A first novel that takes a poetic yet searing look at the cost of violence to a young girl in West Philadelphia in the 1980s." I've added it to my wish list.”
