Introduces the great thinkers of the ages and their philosophies in the context of their socio-economic-political milieus. It is comprehesensive and entertaining.

A needed human side comes out in Durant's narrative, and keeps the philosophies from being sterile. As with all of us, the thinking can't be divested from the man and his times.

So much wisdom in this book, if you can take the time to engage deeply. Durant is a wonderful, insightful, playful writer, and puts philosophy in context with the lives of its philosophers.

Reading philosophy was never so interesting.

Will Durant's, Story of Philosophy needs no strong recommendation or defense. It stands on its own merits as one of the most influential and successful books of the 20th century. It intends to bring philosophy out of the ivory towers and to put it in the hands of the average person. It does so in a manner that is unparalleled by any other work.

he book, however, does have its limitations, which the average reader will not care too much about, if they even notice them at all, but which a scholar or professor of philosophy would decry. First off, the book skips pretty lightly over some major philosophical figures (Descarte, Hume, Locke, Rosseau.) Also, since it was originally written in the 1920's and then later updated in the early 60's, it misses some more contemporary philosophers and philosophical movements (notably, Sarte and the existential movement.) Still, this is a very practical and useful introductory text to philosophy that is time-honored and hard-to-beat. I recommend it to you if you have even a passing interest in the subject. If you read it and enjoy it, you will be forever a lover of philosophy.

A very subjective and emotional account of the philosophers from Plato to some of Durant's contemporaries.
