I read this while I was traveling in West Africa and I ended up leaving it there because there wasn't room for it in my suitcase. It is an Odyssey of an Indian family that spans generations. Dynamic and sensual, dramatic and sweeping. Elegantly written!

There's this horrible rape in the beginning, then some family feud's and this guy's search to find the perfect mango ? It just didn't have anything that held me to the story. One of the few fiction books I've read that I had to force myself through. It was the novel equivalent of a Malayalee prayer meeting. Anyway, the only good point was it gave a slight glimpse at turn of the past century Kerala.

I was transfixed, transported to a different world, emotionally distraught and giddy with happiness.
In short, I lived the book....simply the best book I have ever read.

The comparisons to "100 years of solitude", this must of been why I liked this book...
