Have just joined Shelfari and been asked to put the first book on my shelf. Tthere were an awful lot of candidates and then I thought, no, 'RIght Ho Jeeves' is perfect.

I agree, Wodehouse is The Master - charming, fluent, accessible, unshowy, a creator of great comic characteres and increasingly surreal farcical plots, AND he takes the piss out of all pomposity. Definitely a good egg .

And, oh boy, that blissful style. Consider Agustus Fink-Nottle, a life time swiller of orange juice, havong the dreadful stuff spiked by all his wellwishers in order to brace him for the ordeal of being Guest of Honour at Market Snodsbury Grammar School Prize Giving: 'Gussie had that pebble-beached smile of one against whose back teeth the stuff was sloshing.' And, later, 'Gussie stood up and tacked to the front of the stage.'

If I had, just once, written like that, I would die happy.
