Theory of Religion

by Georges Bataille

Theory of Religion, along with its companion volumes of The Accursed Share, forms the cornerstone of Bataille's "Copernican" project to overturn not only economic thought but its ethical foundations as well. When I was first reading this book for a course on the Old Testament, I couldn't stop scribbling notes and questions in the margins.

Every time I go back and read this book, I'm lost in my own world of contemplation and exploration of how religion has evolved and has played such a major role in forming socital/personal worth.

Although this doesn't read quite as smoothly as The Accursed Share, anyone who is interested in studying religion should give this one a try.
