This account of the survival of the crew of the whaling ship Essex after being rammed by a sperm whale is informative, exciting, and an easy read.

In the heart of the Sea is a VERY intense book that tells of a whale ship that was attacked by a whale and sunk, leaving the crew stranded in small, falling apart boats 3000 miles from the nearest land. The crew slowly and painfully starves and ends up easing each other. This book tells of the horrors of starvation in more detail than ive ever read, and therefore its probably not a good read for young people. This book was put together from many accounts of the story, from journals and letters written by the survivors, because the event actually happened in the 1800s. Despite this, the author makes it sound like he was there.

This was one of those book that I literally couldn't put down. This story is so fantastic and unbelievable it is hard to imagine humans making it through. Phibrick writing style is perfect for this type of story. He has a real gift for stringing the loose narrative threads and disparate sources into a totally cohesive and engaging read.
This is one of those books that I recommend to absolutely everyone.

One of the better non-fiction books I've read. Haunting.

This book is about the true tragedy of the whaleship that Herman Melville based "Moby Dick." It gives a lot of historical information about New England whaling communities, as well as the horrific details the crew endured as it hunted for a special whale.
