I am not one to read this type of book. I love contemporary fiction, but I decided I should read more non-fiction to balance things out. I really enjoyed "River of Doubt" about T. Roosevelt's journey down the river in the Amazon. Therefore, I chose "Brutal Journey" for it seemed somewhat alone...

The first part of the book was "brutally" slow, but still a fascinating story.

I am not one to read this type of book. I love contemporary fiction, but I decided I should read more non-fiction to balance things out. I really enjoyed "River of Doubt" about T. Roosevelt's journey down the river in the Amazon. Therefore, I chose "Brutal Journey" for it seemed somewhat alone the same vein. I loved this book. It read so easily and the story was captivating. I was amazed at how tough these Spanish explorers were and their bravery is amazing. Imagine venturing into land that they were the first Europeans to see. How they survived the countless hostile encounters with the Indians, starvation, bitter winters and scorching summers was captivating. I kept an atlas handy to aid me in following their journey. I would highly recommend this book.
