I can't believe only 158 people have read this, I must have the wrong version.
Because this is a classic, must read.

This is an interesting piece of history, and facinating to read with some external insight into its historical significance. However, as a novel it isn't all that great. I especially hate how easy these authors make it look to learn languages, esp. East Asian languages.

Great story, sadly still valid. See mini-review at http://relaxandhavefun.com/?p=127

A shocking and thought-provoking study of the arrogance and detrimental mind-shift that occurred when American government employees were sent to work in cultures unlike their own, this book has not lost any of its impact nor relevance with today’s global markets. Although Lederer and Burdick plundered their personal experiences in Southeast Asia’s American diplomatic circles, the views, actions and (sometimes) devastating consequences are applicable to any aspect of American interaction abroad. Some characters are sympathetic, others are vile caricatures, but all are identifiable and provide a lesson for how we are viewed on the global stage. Mandatory reading for ANY American traveling abroad.

Excellent, and just as relevant today as when it was written.

This book had a profound affect on me. I read it just before joining the Peace Corps.

Excellent old book - lovely sub-stories within the main theme.
