The violence of my affection. As a hopeless and proud romantic Jane Austen is one of my favorite authors and Pride and Prejudice is one of my favorite romances. I’m not a bodice ripper, romance novel type of girl, but this is perfect. Who wouldn’t want the devilishly handsome Mr. Darcy despite...

I'd attempted to read "Pride and Prejudice" four or five times before I finally dug in and decided to try and fight it out. After the first thirty pages, I found that it wasn't a fight anymore. This is a delightful, funny, heartfelt book, and I'm so glad I made it through the rough start to get to the end.

It's not the beginning itself that I find off-putting, but the style of the writing. I've read very little of the "classics" list that everyone rattles off, and that makes it a bit difficult for me to sit down and get used to the style of the writing. But I am really, truly glad to have gotten used to the style and getting the whole thing read.

The most impressive aspect of "Pride and Prejudice" is the way it still resonates. We're not in a system of strict class-based society anymore, but Lizzie could still be any woman in the world. She's smart; she's brave; she knows what she wants and won't settle for less than exactly what she believes she deserves. Romantic comedies could learn a lot from "Pride and Prejudice". It's not just about crazy miscommunications and awkward introductions; it's about being willing to move past the embarrassment, talking like adults, and getting what you want in life.

...talks about the reality as regards to the demands of society...

pride and prejudice would not be talking about adventures nor would it be talking about two lovers who were brought to grave events and in the end find themselves in a live-happily-together-ending....

it is far from that, or i shud say pride and prejudice is simplier than that...

it shows how people would stick to the morality of their choices...

it shows how people would depend on what is right...

it shows how people conforms to the good standards of society...

Haven’t posted anything lately… So here goes my backlog.

Pride and Prejudice. I saw the movie last year and absolutely loved it! It has then been our (just my "little" sister and I - the rest of the household find it horrendously boring) default movie almost every time we do a DVD marathon on a lazy Sunday afternoon. Such was my love for this Jane Austen lit piece that my sister decided to give me a copy of the novel for my birthday.

I honestly took a long time to finish the book. I had to stop for months, even reading a couple of books in between (I have this habit of reading 2 to 3 books simultaneously). When I finally decided to continue reading, I realised I’ve forgotten where I last paused so I had to read it again from the beginning. Don’t get me wrong. It wasn’t boring. It was my first time to read a Jane Austen novel and surprisingly I found it quite concise, for lack of a better term. I always had this impression that classics were dragging but this novel isn’t at all like that! I only dragged because I already knew how the story would go - I mean, how far can the movie deviate from the book? The movie even lifted the dialogues from the book verbatim. So I had all these reasons to put it down and do something more exciting…haha, like riding the flying fish (ugh this was when I got stung by a jellyfish).

Anyway, when I got to the part when Darcy confessed his feelings for Eliza, I swear couldn’t put the book aside anymore. It was much more enthralling than the movie because the author had more time to develop their love story. I loved the way each character’s intimate thoughts were poignantly revealed. It’s so different when you read the novel and actually get a first hand look into the characters’ feelings - how Darcy became fascinated with Eliza and was so careful not to be too obvious about it…how Eliza was so ashamed of her accusations at Darcy and was still hopeful that despite such actions he would still come to marry her. And in between were all these chance meetings where they never had the guts to admit their foolishness. All they can do were small gestures that the other person could just easily misread as simple acts of politeness (kay torpe naman kasi ng mga tao ng panahon na yon). Argh! The plot is so simple yet I’m twisting with anxiety!
This book really comes in highly recommended. Well worth buying. And speaking of buying, a new branch of Fully Booked just opened in Bonifacio High Street (free plugging again). They sell hard-bound copies of Pride and Prejudice for only P350. They have other hard-bound titles as well. Somebody restrain me!!!

One of my favourite books of all time!

It's got everything you could want in a book -
    Satire and wit
An engaging heroine and a dashing hero
A love story minus all the sap but still romantic enough to make you sigh
