It's amazing that the shenanigans of the 2000 US Presidential Election happened the way they did. Florida and all those dang hanging chads.

It's even more amazing that nearly the same thing happened over 100 years prior during the election of 1876. States elected one candidate, then switched and voted for the other candidate. This happened in 4 states (note, Florida was once again in the thick of it all), causing the election to be decided by 1 electoral vote with the newly elected president having lost the popular vote.

Vidal is great at blending fiction with historical events. Even though this book was published in 1976, it still rings true that the game of politics never changes, only the players.

Remains my favorite of all Vidal's historical fictions (and I've read most of them).

Another of Vidal's best. Did you think the morass of the 2000 election was something new? Vidal marked the Bicentennial by giving his readers this absorbing account of the political intrigue and corruption rampant during our nation's Centennial presidential race. I think this just might be my favorite of his US chronicles.
