Didn’t Like It“Started out great, but it got so dreary and I found myself skipping paragraphs here and there. I kept saying to myself, Get Over It!! The girl goes through a terrible time, but things get better for her, and she never lets up on the description of her hurt. Frustrating that she never had it...” see full review » see other reviews » |
“Without a Map tells the story of Meredith, a girl who is ostracized from her life because she gives birth at the age of 16. It is about family, and about finding yourself and letting go of grief. This book was sad, powerful, and well written for the most part. There were parts taht were kind of boring, but overall I enjoyed this read.”

I have read other books about adoption of babies from young girls in the 50's and 60's. This story tells of one of the darker sides of those adoptions and the lies administrators told, one that to this day still isn't spoken about a lot.
I assumed the book would focus on her reunion with her child and their life after that, so I was surprised at how long it took to get to that point. Overall it was an interesting read. It's just amazing what one person can fit into a single lifetime!”

When 16 year old Meredith becomes pregnant, the loving home and friends she thought she had, cut her out of their lives. She was forced to give up her baby for adoption, and was frought with confusion and questions all the rest of her life. How could her parents cut her off like this? She wandered, meeting interesting questionable people, with no particular aim or destination. Maybe her destination was when she eventually did meet up with her son (as a young man). ”

Hall is an amazing writer and her memoir, though racked with pain is one of the most fascinating stories I have ever read. The title itself is a reference to her taking an uncharted trip through Europe for several months. After reading this memoir I am curious to see what else Hall has written over the years and I strongly recommend her writing to anyone wanting to read something not well known.”

It made me think back to my own mother who was Preganat in the early 1950's and sent to a home for unwed mothers. It made me wonder how she was treated. The book was thought producing.”

Its description of unwed teen pregnant experience in '60s was so accurate. Teens should read and ask their grandmothers! Close to the end, the author describes her surprise at having become 55 and what she sees in the mirror as opposed to what she feels. I've described this myself to others but she expresses it so much better. I think she writes plainly but beautifully.”
