  • Nell: Nell lives with her grandmother, she is a merrrybegot, someone who is born on Mayday. She is part midwife, part healer, and is eventually accused of being a witch.
  • Grace Madden: The minister's elder daughter--she accuses Nell of witchcraft to cover up her own misconduct.
  • Patience Madden: The minister's younger daughter. She is compelled by her sister to participate in Nell's accusation. Her confession from later in life is dispersed throughout the narrative.
  • The Cunning Woman: Nell's granny; she is the village's elderly healer & midwife.
  • Mistress Bramlow: A kindly friend to Nell and her grandmother.
  • Minister Madden: The minister in town who begin to preach hellfire and damnation, especially concerning witchcraft.
