As said by the author, history as far as most indian text books go - end after 1947.

This book is contemporary history - History that i have heard through my grandparents, parents & have seen personally. This is what makes it thrilling.

I cannot say if this can be called the most definitive work on modern Indian History (after independence), but it has a different looking glass! Guha chooses to shade indian history with colors taken from the palette of ideologues rather than events! The dichotomies in this narrative are drawn between how different ideologues would have responded after Gandhi rather than making us understand how events shaped people an the country! Brilliant to read and nicely researched.

A must read for every Indian citizen. The story of post-independent "democratic" India told in a telling and lucid fashion.

I loved this book. A must read for any person who wants to know more about "India"

I realize that the "India" that i have taken for granted all my life has been a delicate concept that strong people have managed to retain over time inspite all odds.

This is something similar to my reverence for Gandhi after reading "Freedom at Midnight" by Dominique Lappiere & Larry Collins

One of the most comprehensive and more importantly interestingly written History of modern India. A must read for every Indian to understand why we are where we are in Indian politics

Brilliant. It was never easy for india right from start. Its amazing that leaders were pushed to do somethings by petty politics at that time also and we today just think politicans took bad decision.

Disintegration has always been paranoia based on region, religion, caste, language, etc.

    MUST READ
