A historically appropriate account of treatment of lepers in Hawaii.

Extremely interesting and sad story about generations growing up in Hawaii. A little slow in the very beginning but really good.

This book wasn't easy to read because in many ways, it made me sad. But sad, isn't bad-- it can be powerful and transforming. I love literature that focuses on feminine empowerment. I am saddened when I am confronted with the disgrace of one culture destroying another by domination. And although this is and has been the human condition, I see a new paradigm arising. I am deeply connected to the Hawaiian culture. When I read this book, it helped me to realize how important it is, to be a part of the solution for healing its..'aina---land. I am now a part of Hawaii's solution-- and I am grateful to this book to assist me in understanding how important it is for me to approach this process in the sanctity it deserves.

You have to understand islanders to really get this book. You have to have heard at least a little pigeon in your time. Pono is a strong, amazing woman who loves a man and her children through everything. Her life story is heartbreaking and awakening. I loved this book. You have to read it.
