After finishing this novel, I've proven that Nick Joaquin should be read not just once, but multiple times. This mystery story is easy to follow, but the underlying symbolisms are not. This book requires lots of patience but after plodding through the historical backgrounds and other whatnot, you get the action and deception and then you get hit in the head with the climax. awesome.

The characters themselves are symbolisms. I think that the main theme is about Christianity vs. paganism, but I feel there is more to it than that. The mystical writing style of Joaquin demands a second read.
