Children will always be affected by the choices of their parents, just as one will always be affected by their own choices.

McLarin did a good job of touching on a few different styles of motherhood and the consequences of choices on those other than yourself. The story slows in places, however I took it as an opportunity to reflect on my childhood thoughts and experiences as well as reflect on my own mothering. The story of Grace Jefferson, a young (35) middle class black woman who has just been turned down for tenure at UNC, has moved to Boston with her scientist husband, and who feels suffocated by her young children and affluent middle class domesticity in general, is somewhat engaging.
