Very inspiring with great ideas for creating a successful classroom and being a successful, passionate teacher. Esquith is an excellent writer and from the sound of it a more than outstanding teacher.

I was prepared to really like this book but as a public school teacher, I'm concerned about the author's underlying (and perhaps unintentional) message that unless you work 12 hours a day, 6 days a week, you're just not doing all you can to educate your students. I found myself feeling sorry for any child at his school who wasn't in Room 56 and wondered about the author's relationship with his colleagues. He also doesn't address the substantial costs of his extra activities: _Where_ does he get the money to buy instruments and take his class to Washington DC every year? Even so, I agree with many of his observations about how to inspire and motivate kids, and hope to apply some of his ideas to my kindergarten class this year. (Fall 2009)

This is an inspirational book about a teacher who is totally dedicated to the success of his students. While I question how one can live a balanced life with a family and teach the way Rafe does, I do admire his commitment. I also took note of some of the things he does and incorporated them into my own teaching.

Rafe writes about different methods that he has found helpful over the past 25 years of teaching at an inner-city school in L.A. This book gave me some wonderful ideas to use in my classroom and I especially like and plan to use his method of giving each student a job and teaching them how to balance a checkbook. This is an awesome idea for my Life Skills class!

This is an inspirational book about an extremely dedicated educator. Teaching literally is his life and his students reap the benefits of his caring, learned, experienced strategies for building success throughout their lives.

Lots of great idea, but the author is a bit over the top. I can see the benefits in all he does, but there is no way I could teach music lessons, art lessons, drama, movie appreciation, etc! I give him a lot of credit, but I know my limits. Put many of his ideas in a list of "things to try in 2009-2010."
