Thought-provoking, fairly dense - but that's to be expected. ”

It reveres the source without placating its audience. It attacks the subject intelligently and readably. If you are interested in Christian study without blind faith in the way, start here.”

Her knowledge and understanding of religion would be a great boost for "truth seekers".”
“Wow, so much to learn about the history of the bible. This is a very factual account of what was going on in history when different portions of the bible were being written. It goes to show how much history and religious and personal influence went into different portions of the bible. ”

So here's the short version (because I'm not going to type it again).
Read this book if you want to get a great starting point for biblical history. Karen Armstrong meticulously takes us through the list of names, dates and contributions of all the folks who worked to understand the Bible and who contributed to our current thought from the beginning to present day.
Armstrong is not a Christian, she's a secular historian. So, if you are easily offended, you may want to stay clear of this one. She discounts Genesis, Exodus and the rest of Israel's history.
Anyway - I recommend this book for all who are serious about studying biblical history.”
“I can say that I've really enjoyed every page. Armstrong's history of the changing interpretations of the Bible is engrossing and informative. This book is a must for anyone interested in how to read The Bible.”

COMMENTS: Karen Armstrong can write history and explain theological thinking like no one else: clearly, concisely, and very readable.”
