I was given this book to read by a teacher when she caught me reading My Bondage and My Freedom by Frederick Douglas because she thought it might be something I’d be interested in. Even though Beloved is fiction, Tony Morrison provides amazing insight into the psychological impact of slavery...

I read this novel six times in my academic career. While I appreciate it's mastery, I am tired of reading it.

Powerful, heart-wrenching, and so full of sybolism, I had to really pay attention. However, This is one of my favorite Morrison books. What won't a mother do for her children?

My not-so-scientific study led me to conclude people either LOVE this book or HATE this book - both with all of their might.

I fall in the LOVE category. Besides the scandalous "Are You There God It's Me Margaret" and "Where the Red Fern Grows" books I read so many times the books actually fell apart, this is the ONLY book I have read more than three times. The amazing thing is, it feels like I'm reading it for the first time with every re-read.

A little dark and graphic. Morrison is excellent.

Like Faulkner. Had to read passages over because of voice. Begs the question, is life worth living without freedom.

I was given this book to read by a teacher when she caught me reading My Bondage and My Freedom by Frederick Douglas because she thought it might be something I’d be interested in. Even though Beloved is fiction, Tony Morrison provides amazing insight into the psychological impact of slavery and the emancipation of slaves on the individuals. She’s truly wonderful at creating this interplay between community and the identity of the individual self; how one goes about reclaiming their individual identity and their sense of self-worth after slavery. While there are different elements at play, the most important aspect is for the characters to overcome the fear, trauma, and pain they associate with the past so they can move forward.
