It was heavily ironic, stylishly over-dramatic, and exaggerated in a Swiftian sort of way that almost had you believing that the outrageously improbable adventures of dear old Olivia might actually happen to a normal human being.
Fielding's got a great sense of irony and dry British humor. Great fun, except for the Saturday Morning adventure serial-type cliff-hanger endings that were a little too cheesy to take, you know the kind: "Next thing she knew, she was looking down the barrel of a gun." End of chapter.
I have to admit it worked on me, though. I kept telling myself...just one more chapter, then I'll go to bed...

“Mills & Boon meets John Le Carre - actually it is much better than that! Vintage Helen Fielding - makes you feel like you are the heroine. Totally enjoyed at least the first half of the book. And then of course I wonder why my life is so boring and I never seem to run into these complete hunks who totally flip for me - I guess that is where fact and fiction part :)”

When the new OceansApart, a floating apartment complex aka. huge ship full of civilians, is blown up she suspects Feramo. At a party she met him and sparks flew for the wanna-be movie producer. Apart from his crew he told her he wanted to have breakfast with her and to not go to her meeting on the OceansApart. Did he know it was going to blow? Is he a terrorist? Is Olivia falling into her overactive imagination over a lover's plea and one Arabic word? Soon she is traversing the world from Los Angeles to Popayan, diving and always not quite sure if she is really in danger or her mind is flirting with Ian Fleming.
I think this was overall very well done. It's chick-lit meet spy novel which I guess is very popular these day with Stephanie Plum, but I haven't read one at all recently. From the title alone I assumed Feramo was probably just a playboy so it surprised me that Fielding actually went for a spy book. Al-Queda is a touchy subject, though.
Fielding didn't write anything that wasn't interesting. There are lots of breaks and nothing is written to fill space. I like that in a novel, but some people don't. However, she did chop it so short I wasn't really sure if Olivia and Rich were hooking up or not. Fielding totally cuts out any romance.”
“This was nothing remotely like Bridget Jones, but it's good of Fielding to branch out. This was like "spy-thriller-lite". I thought it was pretty creative and I did enjoy it cover to cover, but I did'nt love it.”
