This is not the book for someone who cannot sit down for a while and read. Howell creates the Orcish language with a credible imitation of certain languages using inversion techniques and gender differences in speech. King's Property is definitely a book a linguist who enjoys fantasy would enjoy....

Great beginning and ending, however, the story slows to a crawl as the author develops the storyline of why and how a washavoki named Dar becomes queen of the Orcs...otherwise King's Property would have rated 5 stars. An easy entertaining read. Will be reading Book 2 of the trilogy.

This book is really noteworthy! The author created a world with grim reality that shows you the way things are in the past. It also keeps you on your toes because you don't know what will happen to the main character of the book.

Years ago, even before I discovered Tolkien, I noticed a tendency of fantasy authors to invent a language to flesh out their stories with. Much like early science fiction tales that talk a lot about the science involved instead of just letting the audience worry about it, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. This is one that succeeds. It succeeds to the point that I sometimes felt it would be better to be an Orc than a human.

The use of language for symbolic reasoning is of particular interest to me. In addition to feeding that interest, the tale contains believable magic (of compulsion, illusion and prophecy), interesting heroes, villains and characters as well as a well-constructed story.

This is not the book for someone who cannot sit down for a while and read. Howell creates the Orcish language with a credible imitation of certain languages using inversion techniques and gender differences in speech. King's Property is definitely a book a linguist who enjoys fantasy would enjoy. The characters are flat from the beginning, but develop into rounder characters as Dar, the heroine, learns the Orcish language. The story of Dar as she tries to survive in a world where men are brutal to women and Orcs are a matriarchal society breeds to a heavily enjoyable trilogy. Take heart, if you aren't the type of reader to sit down and focus on this book, you'll be lost with the Orc language, but have no fear, Howell provides a glossary of terms in the book with some hints on how to interpret her twist on the Orcish language.

Really good book. I couldn't put it down, and I was uneasy until I finished it. It just draws you. That's how well it is written. The storyline is great. The main character, Dar, is easily relatable to. She represents the personal struggle in each of us. The descriptions, are so strong that you can picture the entire story unfolding in your mind as you read. It a very good book, and I can't wait to pick up the next one.
