Banana Yoshimoto is heartbreaking. She writes so sensitively and sensibly. I couldn't help loving this book so much more thn I intended to. Her characters are real, like they're really alive, and most of them are deeply disturbed and unhappy. It makes the reader want to reach out to them with...

I don't really get it actually. It's very drama, but not over reacting story like we saw on soap opera.

A lonely girl who had given helped by a man would eventually fall in love with that man. That's all about!

Beautiful little novella that is quick to read through, but stays with you long after it is over.

I soooo much wanted to like this book. I am in the camp, however, that went, "Huh?" when I got to the end. The writing style was different - just like others have mentioned. That didn't bother me. I just couldn't quite "get it". I really think that I am missing something.......wish it would have moved me the way that it clearly moved others.

"kitchen" was so tragic that it kind of disturbed me a little. i'm a very sensitive person and reading this story just kind of hurt too much for me to really get into it. I thought it was well written and it made me want to try Yoshimoto's other works of fiction, but I couldn't really enjoy this one as it made me so terribly sad.

This is a fantastic novel. I buy copies at thrift stores to give away to friends.

one of my personal favorite, but it's not for everyone. it's a good 'friend' when you feel lonely.

The novel that started my headlong plunge into modern Japanese literature & culture!!

Yoshimoto's writing, though simple & concise, brings out the beauty of the expression of language, and leaves one pondering her ingenue with words.

Reading her works are like reading a haiku--there are always so many hidden meanings & symbolism in them, and finding them is only the beginning!
