Excellent book! A few main points: 1) complex system based on simple rules with feedbacks. 2) Freewill exists in a practical sense. 3) Simple elements can organize themselves into networks at the edge of chaos, which lead to life. 4) Physical and biological components of our planet are part of a single network that operates in a self-organized way (the Gaia Theory). 5) Test entropy reduction as proof of life beyond Earth.

Gribbin - or the Gribbins, I should say, as John Gribbin complains in his introduction at the publisher's refusal to acknowledge his wife's major contribution to the book - writes simply and convincingly about deep and subtle issues in modern science that have a direct bearing on how we understand the universe. CP Snow's case, that knowledge of science should be as much a feature of a general education as, say, history and literature, is strongly made by this book.

A brilliant summary of chaos theory translated into simple language and easily understood examples. Recommended for those who want more than just a few cocktail-party sound bites.
