“The author, Nagib mafouz, reminds me of Tolstoy; deeply insightful and an master at communicating the motivations of his characters. On the downside, he is also like Tolstoy in this way; his stories are boring. Reading Mafouz is of value because it introduces any prospective author to a masterful, insightful style. If only he had a good story to tell! This book is a trilogy of novels about an Egyptian family in termoil. It seemed like a soap opera, only Muslim style rather than American style. The insight into Islamic life was valuable, especially due to our current conflicts with the Islamic extremists.”
