Didn’t Like It1 of 1 members found this review helpful“Engaging start but sputters as it goes along. One can perhaps read so much of Arab warriors winning because they are lean and mean war machines and charged with Islamic fervour against infidels. One of the rare books I didn't finish reading.” see full review » see other reviews » |
“The beginning of this book was strong. In my continuing study of why-the-world-is-the-way-that-it-is, I was curious about the Arab conquest and why they were able to pull it off. I did appreciate the great lengths that Kennedy went to explain the problematic sources. However, once he transitioned to the Eastern conquests, I was geographically lost. Since these locations (east of Iran) are less known in popular culture, it would have been nice to have a short synopsis of previous history before the Arabs came so that I could put their conquest in context. I did enjoy the sections on Spain, Africa, and the Near East (although I do not recall his discussing the crusades much. ”
