Didn’t Like It“Although I liked the writing style, I didn't like the rest of it. Lady Susan was a tramp, and a MEAN tramp at that!” see full review » see other reviews » |
“By far my least favorite of Austen's work, to no fault of Austen herself but rather to my own reading preferences. I am not a fan of reading stories by way of letters between characters, I find it difficult for characters to really have their own unique voice. The only books I have read in which the viewpoint is in constant flux and was done exceedingly well have been Barbara Kingsolver's Poisonwood Bible and Audrey Niffenegger's The Time Traveler's Wife. I appreciate Austen's change from her typical storytelling routines, but I much prefer the titles I have re-read since I was a kid. We'll see how I feel about Lady Susan in ten years when I have re-read her a few times, as of now, I don't much care for her.”

She was writing it as a series of letters, and then it abruptly ended with just a terse summary at the end. I was enjoying it, but the ending was unsatisfactory and hasty. Certainly not vintage Austen, or it would have easily ranked 5 stars!”

This was nice as a light read. Many parts made me laugh and overall it was a pretty good book, just short though.”
“This is perhaps my least favorite of Jane Austen's books. I liked the format, letters written to various characters. I liked being able to develop my own feel for a character through the eyes of other characters in the book. The main reason this is my least favorite is because of the main character. She is completely opposite from Jane Austen's other heroines. She is a selfish, vindictive, manipulating woman. In spite of that, I will read this book again. Jane Austen does a marvelous job.”

The main character is a horrible horible person. She's a gold digging hussy who uses everyone around her. She's manipulative and has no genuine caring for anyone. Thank goodness she's exposed in the end and pretty much exiled from society, horrible woman. The only thing I found interesting was the writing concept she used. The story is told in a series of letters. You get the perspective from Lady Susan, from her one and only friend, from the many people she has used and decieved, from her poor daughter. I wouldn't read it again, though.”
