Claudio and Hero are set to be married. The night before the wedding, Claudio is tricked into thinking he saw Hero with another man. In the meantime, some people are trying to set up Beatrice and Benedick who do nothing but argue with each other.
I found this comedy by Shakespeare quite witty. I loved the characters of Beatrice and Benedick and their interaction with each other. I'm telling you, Shakespeare has got to be the reason we have modern day soap operas. You can't have a play by Shakespeare without tons of backstabbing! There's definitely a lot of that in this one. This is probably one of the better plays I've read by Shakespeare. I have a lot more to go to complete his works though.

“Funny. What do you expect, it is a comedy?”

I think of this as the "nice" version of Taming of the Shrew; the same battle of the sexes banter, except both parties end up giving a little and neither is totally humiliated or subjugated. The Dogsberry scenes leave me cold, and Hero and Claudio are in the running for Dullest Lovers in Shakespeare, but who could resist the reluctantly lovesick Benedict: "I will live in thy heart, die in thy lap, and be buried in thy eyes". And
"I do love nothing in the world so well as you. Is that not strange?" Yes, wondrously strange. And wonderful that this is a story of two former lovers who broke each other's hearts, and must conquer their mutual distrust before the happy ending. A mature Romeo and Juliet, no longer starry eyed, but old enough to know what they're doing and yet still fall rapturously in love.”
“A very witty comedy by the Bard, one of my favoutites close to Love's Labour's Lost and a Midsummer Night Dream.”
