It definitely reads more like a highly-detailed fictional story than a true account of a small-time criminal who makes a place for himself on both sides of WWII. Parts of it are fairly dense with historical details - the names, dates, and locations can be a bit...” see full review » see other reviews » |

“Excellent book, one of the best I have read in the last few years. It was almost an accident how he became an agent. Did he make a difference? I'm not sure. However, he did whatever he did with style. Brillant. Couldn't stop reading it.”

German espionage because I disliked Eddie Chapman, the person, so much. I finally realized that as many disagreeable qualities as he had, he still had two traits I could admire--no matter how he sometimes appeared, he was always on the side of Britain and he was undeniably brave.
As interesting as Eddie and his many adventures were, equally as much fun was the finding out about the people whose lives he touched--from the numerous women who loved him, to his German and British minders, to the Captain of the ship he traveled on. I've read a great deal about WW II, but this added lots I hadn't know about how the German and British espionage systems worked (or didn't). All around a well weritten, interesting (and sometimes fascinating) account. ”
“This book opens with great writing, and a great hook. The true-life story of Agent Zigzag is full of character and derring-do. The book slows down a bit in the middle, but the ending has a fun twist to it. The well-researched account also offers an interesting look at how the prevailing class system permeated the war efforts.”

Would have loved to have met Chapman as I am intrigued by his character and what it was about him that attracted people. Also fascinated by the magician and the amazing work he and his team in North Africa did during the war.”
