Tracy Kidder does a superb service to the work of Paul Farmer as well as the cause in Haiti.

It took me back to the roving hills, the silent, dark skies at night with the vast stars, the superstitious living that permeates even the day, the tension of a developing nation,..as well as the hope and kindness found in most of the Haitians homes and hearts.

Having experienced first-hand the many things described in the book, I feel that it is a must read for anyone thinking of serving in Haiti or the humanitarian field at large.

Tracy Kidder is an excellent writer and I look forward to reading more by him. In this particular book he inserted himself as a character which made the telling more personal. Dr. Paul Farmer is an amazing man and his story reminds me of Greg Mortenson and Three Cups of Tea in their selflessness, energy, devotion to the people they serve and that they provide proof that one man can make a difference. The book is also very eye opening particularly in how American foreign policy affects other countries. And it makes me think I need to do more - we, as individuals need to do more to help those less fortunate then us. I got a little stuck towards the end. My favorite parts were those involving Haiti and when he started expaning and traveling to other countries/projects I got a little weary (so imagine how Dr. Farmer, who is actually doin the work/traveling must feel!!).

Inspiring to a degree, but he comes across as a saint. No mere mortal could hope to do what he did.
