“Informative, analytical. Reading it,I am better equipped to deal with prejudiced minds that I face and I may face.”
“it is a very good book for students like me who are still not much aware about india ,the way it became india..its culture ,its people .i would like to read it again to understand it fully.”
“I find the book very interesting. We actually are a kind who like look at all the points of views on every matter. The point has been dealt with, with lots of examples.”
“It is by far the most interesting read on Indian minds....From Tagore to Sen, the book talks about eolved minds further evolving and taking a vast cultural and multilingual blend of politicians, economists and social reformists making India what it rarely seems to be,but really is.”
“Great book about India every educated Indian should read it”
“Actually the book is made of many different elements put together. What fasinates me is the argument taken further by Mark Tully that we Indians are an innately argumentative and eventually accommodative society. The point that this religious intolerance that we see today was not there in the past except in pockets. There is nothing for me more poignant than the arguments of Shankarcharya persuading Madana Mishra with Mishra wife as the referee. Mishra looses and becomes a brahmachary. But there is the persecution of non shaivaites by the late chola kings or the destruction of Jain temples. Moreover there was an active tradition of atheism. Vedanata carefully looked at does not have a personal god. This tradition of debate and tolerance is a two edged sword. What harm it can do is to generate inertia and inaction. What good it can do is to allow the winds from all over to blow at our feet as Tagore once put it. This sudden intolerance and religious fanaticism that we see today is out of character. We must be intolerant of intolerance, a phrase imparted to me many years ago by a Jesuit priest.”
“its a book I pass around among my friends who are curious about India, its history and various other aspects of the culture and society. I wish more people in India would understand and think religion and history like Dr Sen puts it.His arguments are very deep and had to revisit some”
“Didn't get why the book was supposed to be so great? Didn't grip me.”
