Marchetto gives a different approach to this true story of her battle with breast cancer. She's edgy and funny and not too much of a downer about a depressing subject. Great cartoonist who illustrates the book with fun depictions of her friends, family and cancer itself.

A light-hearted and candid look at dealing with cancer.

Graphic novels aren't just about your friendly neighborhood Spiderman anymore. A very good and touching autobiography of a cartoonist who discovers that she has breast cancer. Funny at times, sad at others, this book gives a new perspective at a very difficult topic, and she does so in with her talent in drawing.

    A definite must read.

There were several scenarios and feelings that she described that resonated with me and my experiences and also those of some of my friends. Not every book will completely fit with everyone (the experience is so unique for everyone) but this one certainly touches home with many of the issues.

Finished autobiographical comic book Cancer Vixen by Marisa Acocella Marchetto, about the author's brush with breast cancer. Would have liked to have liked it more, but found it a bit irritating: lots of what is apparently "Sex and the City" style glamour, mountains of Kabbalah and psychobabble ("when you point a finger at someone, three fingers are pointing back at you") and a cacophony of name-dropping.

Drawing didn't seem particularly original, but there were some nice comic touches, like cancer cells stuck in a traffic jam and so on.

It's definitely aimed at the chick-lit market though, so I'm probably not the best judge. Not really recommended if you don't care about shoes.

This is a fantastic book--I love her New Yorker cartoons (but never before connected her with the reviews of Cancer Vixen I had read before picking up the book).

I've never had cancer (fortunately) but this is a fantastic book. I really liked Acocella's first book (and was long waiting for her to come out with something else) but I think this book is even better.
I recommended it to a friend of a friend--also a young, urbane woman--going through chemo and she savoured it--she said it is what kept her going.
