• Vlad Taltos: Former Jhereg Assassin. Vlad is an Easterner (human) who bought his Jhereg caste. Later a Crime Lord, and finally a hunted man still witty and very adventurous.
• Loiosh: Loiosh is a male Jhereg and Vlads familiar and companion acquired by magic and raised by Vlad from an egg. A Jhereg is a small flying dragon with a poisonous bite. Talks to Vlad telepathically, protects Vlad, spies for Vlad, and senses magic and enemies nearby. Favorite saying: "Can I eat him, boss."
• Kiera the Thief: An important player in Vlad's life and adventures. The best (or at least well known) thief in the Organization. She has helped Vlad out many times in the past.
• Cawti: Is an Easterner female assassin once hired to kill Vlad, and then becoming a partner and his wife
• Morrolan e 'Drien: Morrolan is a Draegarian sorcerer, now wizard, and owner of Castle Black, a levitating castle hosting a party which has been going on over 200 years. He bears the magical Great Weapon called Blackwand which is also his familiar. Acting as the Court Wizard, he is powerful and well known, and best of all, feared. He is an acquaintance, perhaps friend, of Vlad.
• Vlad Norathar: Child of Cawti and Vlad, though Vlad did not meet his son until the boy was 4 years old.
• Kragar: Vlad's First lieutenant while he was a crime lord for the Jhereg Organization. Kragar gets information easily and seems to know everything since he has a talent for people not noticing him. Vlad gets very upset when he almost sits on him by accident. Kragor took over Vlad's territory when Vlad was exiled for breaking an Assassin's rule. Due to Kragor's talent, he must use written orders to his subordinates. He remains a friend to Vlad, but has no Great Weapon.
• Lady Teldra: Lady Teldra was an Issola and an assistant to Morrolan of Castle Black. It is also the name Vlad calls his Great Weapon, a morganti dagger better known as Godslayer. It is believed Lady Teldra's soul was saved into the morganti blade by Vlad.
• Aliera e' Kieron: liera e' Kieron: A Lyorn Dragaerian Lord, is a cousin to Morrolan. She is touchy, bloodthirsty and loyal to her friends, of which Vlad is one. Vlad helped rescue her soul from its entrapment in a staff some years ago. Her Great Weapon is Pathfinder. She has been arrested by Empress Zerika for her dabbling in the illegal Elder Magic, which makes Vlad a good friend to have. We hope.

• Rocza: A female Jhereg, mated to Loiosh after following Loiosh home one day. She helps Vlad and even Cawti as does Loiosh.
• Delwick
• Sethra Lavode: The Undead Enchantress of Dzur Mountain, and Warlord of several Empires in the last few thousand years, including the present Empire. Her Great Weapon is Iceflame.
• Morganti: A Morganti Blade is a magical blade imposing death by swallowing the soul, a death which no magic can reverse.
• Kieron
• Boss: A name for Vlad Taltos when he ran a crew as a crime lord. Loiosh also calls him boss.

• South Adrilankha: This is the ghetto area. Most of the Tecklas (humans are the great majority) reside here along with the slaughterhouses.

• Teckla: A small rodent, somewat like a gerbil or mouse, also the caste name for all those who have no better caste. Includes most Easterners (humans) and other dregs of society
• Issola: A dragaerian caste
• Dzur Mountain: Home of the Enchantress of Dzur Mountain, Sethra Lavode.
• Orca: Caste

• Imperial Palace: The Empress Zerika lives here, therefore the mystical Orb is here also, without which chaos would reign. . Located in Adrilankha, a southern coastal town and hub of commerce.

• Left Hand: A group of woman sorcerers (sorceress) loosely connected with the Organization (Jhereg Mafia). They are hired for many magical needs such as teleporting, reviving the newly dead, and sometimes assassination.
• The Organization: This is the Jhereg business side, controlling most of the criminal activities as well as the crminals. Vlad was a major Crime Lord in the Organization, making most oof his money and many enemies during this period of his life.
• Jhereg Council: This group of Jheregs controls the political, social, and economic aspects of the Jheregs, including its criminal Organization. But has little control over Vlad which as caused great problems in the past.
