“I vote for the scene in this novel where Portnoy goes to visit his girlfriend's family in Iowa as one of the funniest in modern American literature.”

Roth's masterpiece takes place on the couch of a psychoanalyst, an appropriate jumping-off place for an insanely comical novel about the Jewish American experience. Roth has written several great books--Goodbye, Columbus and When She Was Good among them, but it is perhaps Portnoy's Complaint for which he is best known. ”

By today's standards it still might raise an eyebrow or two, i.e. Portnoy desecrating the liver his mother was koshering for dinner and his mother sending him out to buy Kotex. I don't know if anyone still reads this book and whether or not it still gives that negative slant to the 'typical' Jewish mama is beyond me. Who knows? Try it, you might like it. The only thing I clearly remember about this book..."Ikey, Mikey, Jake and Sam, we're the boys who eat no ham!..." ”
