Didn’t Like It“SF novel. As the response to a SETI message comes back from the stars, an astronomer and spouse undergo rejuvenation treatment to give them a chance to keep the conversation going. |
“Wish there was a 3.5 star review for this book! I thought the ideas in the book were fantastic -- alien communication more real than in your typical space opera. But the characters were difficult for me to relate to.”

Nothing wrong with that, just not really my taste ”

Nice idea, but a pretty poor novel. It's written very like this. As is becoming obligatory for some SF, Sawyer makes a valiant attempt to do Relationships and Feelings, but the characters don't really come to life: they seem like diagrams on a blackboard.
I was hoping that there would be a big skiffy resolution to make all that worth enduring, but it doesn't really amount to much. Recommendation: avoid.”
“This was a very enjoyable novel. The story is basically a character study of an old man suddenly blessed with youth while his wife of sixty years is still left an old woman. Interwoven with this is the story of messages from another star, and the impact that message has.
I was very very drawn to the protagonist, in particular, because I identify with him strongly. I'm a young widower; I have myself been young and energetic while I watched my wife wither and die, so the parallels are quite strong. I'm sure this unlikely background is why I love the book so much, so I'll just leave this review at that. For me: 5/5.

“I have tried to read two books by Robert Sawyer - this one and The Calculating God. I was not able to finish either of them. ”

A woman decodes a message from space years in her past, and recently a new one has arrive. The only problem is she's in her 80's and might not last to finish the decoding. Her and her husband try a new procedure called Rollback, the age them physically to their mid 20's.
It has a good premise to it, but it's a little boring and slow. ”
“I don't feel Rollback is one of Sawyer's best so I can't give it a five star review. I think the biggest problem I had with this book was that entirely too much was given away in the book jacket synopsis-I knew going in where a lot of the conflict was going to arise. This lessened the dramatic tension for me. ”
