The first few chapters started a little slow for me but then i was just amazed how well written the rest of the book was. There are other books i find more appealing but this is the only book where i actually feel like i was in Julia's place. I was able to feel every emotion Julia was feeling. ...

I enjoy Hawkin's books and I loved the plot concept but in the end it didn't deliver as much as I would've hoped. However, I do love the characters. Julia and Alex have great development throughout the story and their romance is enjoyable but I was left wanting at the end. I will say that...

I will say that people should give it a chance and maybe you'll get something out of it that I didn't.

I am looking forward to reading more books written by Karen Hawkins.

this was Karen Hawkins first book. MUCH better than the 2 newer books (Her Master & Commander & Her Officer And Gentleman) by her that I've read. I'm reading the next related book (The Belated Bride) next. I liked that the heroine was a thin, plain, small chested eccentric reformer. :)

Alec MacLean, Viscount Hunterston abducts Julia Frant accidentally instead of her lovely, scheming cousin. He wants an elopement to Gretna Green and the clock is definitely ticking. If he doesn't marry by midnight and live scandal-free for a year, he loses his inheritance. Julia's transformation in Alec's eyes from plain brown wren to elegant swan is a really enjoyable read.

    First lines:
It was a hell of a night for an elopement. After three miserable hours, the rain had finally ceased.
