Grandmother tells Lilly a story about when she was young, she would leave a gift for the whales, and if they liked it, they would return a gift to her. Lilly’s great uncle tries to discourage her, saying that it’s nothing but a silly old tale. Despite this, Lilly throws a flower into the water and calls to the whales saying, “this is for you.” Later that night, she sits and then the whales appear, singing a song for her.
I love this book, not only because of a personal obsession with whales, but because it is such a beautiful book. The illustrations are nothing less than gorgeous and the story brings hope, connecting humans with nature.
In class uses:
This would be a great book to use to show that there is a connection between all life forms on the planet. The book teaches a lesson, that the smallest of gifts when given with a heart full of joy can bring a huge impact. If nothing else, this is a great ‘feel good’ story to read to a class.

“The Whales Song by: Dylan Sheldon
Grade level: 2
Review: This story is a realistic fiction book. Lilly asks her Grandmother to tell her a story of the whales. She tells Lilly of the special mysterious gift of the Whales song. Lilly wants to see the whales for herself.
This book is a good book for second graders to read. This book has a great storyline. I would recommend this book for a classroom library. ”

This is a very touching story. It is one of my favorites! It is about a little girl named Lily who is listening to her Grandmother tell her a story about when she was a little girl and used to get gifts from the whales. Lily is a very imaginative little girl and wants to hear the whales sing her a song too! So she brings the whales a gift and after much waiting, finally gets a gift in return.
This story has great pictures! Children will really enjoy looking at them. This book is a great book to encourage students to use their imaginations and to believe anything can happen if they believe. I would have students tell me in writing something they believe in. (ex. God, magic, ect.)
