I purely read this book because it was by Jostein Gaarder, without even looking at any description. As a simple love story, touching and quirky, it was actually very enjoyable, but as a book by Gaarder, it was slightly disappointing. It is a love story with a different twist, not an exiting philosophical or adventurous work.

The Orange Girl is a book about a fifteen year old boy named Georg who finds a letter written by his dead father eleven years ago that was supposed to be given to him when he turned older. He now lives with his mother and stepfather. The whole book revolves around the letter. His father tells him about his mother who he at first doesn't know who the orange girl is in the title. He becomes obsessed with trying to find out who this orange girl is and imagines picking her out from a crowd. He finally finds out that the orange girl is his mother. She is called the orange girl because his father met her while they were both waiting for the bus and she had bags and bags of oranges in her hands. Through this letter Georg discovers the many qualities of his father he did not know before. He finds out that they both have an interest in the Hubble telescope and many other things. The whole book deals with questions about life but none of them are any answered and so it really got me thinking about my own life.

Nice book, quick read. I really liked the main characters, even "normal" people can look pretty mysterious. Not the best book of Gaarder though.

This is a book about a boy who receives a letter from his dead father. The letter is basically the whole book. Its really good. It keeps you guessing and you'd never expect the ending. For example, when I was reading the book I thought that the ending was going to be COMPLETELY different. I felt really stupid when I found out what i predicted had nothing to do with what had actually happened. But, it was really good. It goes slow though... and at parts it could be a little boring and you wish to just skip to the next part. But overall it was good and I'm glad that i read it. This book is about love and the reason why you live and it has a very deep meaning into it. It really makes you think so thats good. =D

this is the 3rd time i think that jostein gaarder failed me. never judge a book really by its cover. this one, i just tried to finish since i already started it. plain love story in the guise of a mystery. nothing spectacular for me apparently.
